Non-Fiction Review "My Lobotomy" by,Howard Dully

My Lobotomy by, Howard Dully
This book was a sad yet fascinating story of a man looking for the answers as to why he was given a lobotomy at the age of 12.Howard's mother died when he was young and his father remarried, his stepmother pretty much hated him from the start and was mentally and physically abusive to him.She went from doctor to doctor trying to have him committed ,anything to get him out of her house. She finally met Dr.Freeman the pioneer of the ice pick lobotomy in him she thought she'd found the solution to her problems, as I read the book I had to wonder if she hoped it would kill him.He was the youngest person to have a lobotomy and most medical professionals at the time were very much against this procedure in general and especially on children.
The books tells of Howard's life after the lobotomy ,his stepmother continued to send him away he grew up in juvenile homes and state hospital's to being homeless and alcoholic. When he was finally clean and sober and in a stable relationship and had children of his own he decided he wanted answers to his lifelong question -Why?.
In doing research Howard was contacted by NPR Radio the last three chapters are on this radio show. They found his medical record's that Dr.Freeman had donated to a library,he finally got some of the answers he was looking for.
I went on NPR.org and listened to the radio show it was very interesting and emotional.
I recommend this book whole-heartedly.

Review of the Sugar Queen by, Sarah Addison Allen

The Sugar Queen starts out with the story of 27 year-old Josey Cirrini who still lives with her overbearing mother, she escapes to her closet filled with romance novels and sugary snacks.Till the night she finds a local waitress, Della Lee Baker, hiding in her closet.Dellas decides to change Josey's life.Josey then meets Chloe Finley who has problems of her own, books appear out of nowhere and follow Chloe around. This was the fun part of this book because the books are usually self-help or repair if something is broken. And if she doesn't read them they keep appearing wherever she is.This story is one of friendship, love, loss and stepping out of the box.I found it a very interesting story with a big twist ending so I won't go into any more detail of it,as I don't want to ruin it for anyone.I thoroughly enjoyed this book Sarah's writing flows nicely and this story kept me reading. Her books have a supernatural side but you don't have to enjoy fantasy to enjoy her wonderful books.4 1/2 stars

The Killer's Wife by,Bill Floyd 5 Stars

The Killer's Wife by,Bill Floyd. What if the person you were married to and having a child with turned out to be a cold-blooded serial killer? What do you say to the victim's families? What do you say when they ask how you could not know?
That is the main concept of this book;the story starts 6 years after her husbands conviction where he has been sentenced to death.Nina has changed her name moved across the country and tried to forget the awful past and raise her son to be a good person. But the past has caught up with her and the ramifications could be fatal.
This is a compelling read.I couldn't put it down.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery or psychological thriller!

What I'm Reading Now Non-Fiction...

The Book is "Flim-Flam Man,A True Family History"by,Jennifer Vogel. This is an interesting story about a con mans life and the effect on his family,But it is extremely wordy for instance the first sentence in the book is 27 words long.To me it just doesn't flow you find yourself skimming through alot to get to the meat of the story.2 Stars.

what I'm reading now..5 Stars

I just finished "Garden Spells" by, Sarah Addison Allen. What a great book very well written and a fun story that shows there's no place like home.It does have some fantasy aspects to it but even if you don't like fantasy you will enjoy this book, because the core of the book is the relationship between two sisters who find their way back to each other and become better friends than they ever were as young girls. It has delightful characters my favorite being cousin Evanelle and Sydney's daughter Bay.I am looking forward to her next book to be released in May 2008.Its not a sequel this story didn't need one it wrapped up nicely.Would definitely recommend this book.5 Stars!

What I'm Reading Now...

I'm am reading another book by Loraine Despres called The Scandalous Summer of Sissy LeBlanc. As much as I enjoyed Belle Cantrell Sissy is not as enjoyable it has too much blatantly sexual content,to me its just not needed especially since this is set in the 50's.I think these two books would have been good young adult books if there wasn't so much sex in them!Especially Belle since it goes into the subject of racism and suffragettes.Glad I read Belle first because if I had read Sissy first I may not have given Belle a try.

Happy National Library Week

A little library, growing larger every year, is an honourable part of a man's history. It is a man's duty to have books. A library is not a luxury, but one of the necessaries of life.-Henry Ward Beecher

Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest. - Lady Bird Johnson

What is a great love of books? It is something like a personal introduction to the great and good men of all past times. Books, it is true, are silent as you see them on their shelves; but, silent as they are, when I enter a library I feel as if almost the dead were present, and I know if I put questions to these books they will answer me with all the faithfulness and fulness which has been left in them by the great men who have left the books with us.- John Bright

Book I'm reading right now

I am reading the funniest book right now it's called "The Bad Behavior of Belle Cantrell" by, Loraine Despres. It is set in the 1920's with prohibition in full swing and women are fighting for their right to vote. Its about a young widow living in the south and her struggle between independence and southern propriety. This book is very well written and will make you giggle!
